  • Features full-color, hand-colored stipple engravings of volute shells by Louis Charles Kiener for “Species General et Iconographie des Coquilles Vivantes”
  • Kiener’s work stood out from the rest as he chose to illustrate his subjects instead of using the more popular lithograph
  • Framed and ready to hang

These beautifully rendered, hand-colored stipple engravings of cone shells are by Louis Charles Kiener for “Species General et Iconographie des Coquilles Vivantes” (“General Species and Iconography of Recent Shells”) in 1873-1880. Kiener was a French malacologist (scientist who study mollusks, such as snails, clams and octopi,) was born in Paris in 1799. He took a keen interest in conchology, and at a time when lithography had become the most popular form of printing, he opted to illustrate his love of shells.
