I had read about the Bloemencorso Zundert, a behemoth flower parade in Zundert, Netherlands, but I couldn't have prepared myself to witness it in person. The floats are giant sculptures of steel wire, cardboard, papier-mâché, and DAHLIAS. Millions of them, in fact, arranged into tigers, eagles, peacocks, and other figures.
It is as magical and outrageous as it sounds. Inspired and awed, I too wanted to create something solid and sturdy so that surrounding flowers might impart their beauty to it, and that's when the Dahlia Stool came about. Despite its finish, it isn't made of metal but rather brawny ceramic clay, so it's plenty strong to use as a seat or table.
Its column shape presents an almost brutalist appearance--all the better for it to unobtrusively cede the spotlight to its lovely surroundings or disappear into the background when not in use.
