Mudan Stool

Mudan Stool

We may think of English gardens as a common place to spot peonies, and that's true--but we have China to thank for it. Two thousand years ago, Chinese botanists discovered that the Mudan, the tree peony, is different from the Shaoyao, the herbaceous peony, thus setting off a thriving cultivation of tree peonies that has continued ever since. Many of these varieties were shipped to Europe, where they have been growing and enchanting viewers for 200 years.

The Mudan is so vital to the Chinese culture that it is the national flower of China--and that's why we christened this barrel-shaped seat the Mudan Stool. It's a fanciful option for extra seating, side tables, or ottomans (or all three!), and its painted peonies and foliage will remind you not just of English gardens but also where they came from: China.
