The Ottoman Empire was, at one time a broad and vast ruling party that controlled much of the middle east and north Africa. The ottoman itself has roots in this culture where the focal points of an interior would include low, modular seating and lounging furniture, like you see with the Empire Ottoman.
In 1729, the name ‘Ottomane’ first entered the French lexicon. As you travel the cities throughout France today, you still see remnants of the Ottoman influence. In the shop owners that have similar ethnic heritage; in the abundant use of comfortable communal furniture, and in the ideologies about presentation and focal points in design.
This piece shows a unique heritage of both cultures, from the low, wide, square stance to the lightly embellished tufted linen top and the hand turned leg architecture. This is a powerful piece whose design has withstood the test of time.
