The Soroa Garden Arrangement
I have only read about the Soroa Orchid Garden--because it’s in Cuba, I haven’t yet had a chance to visit, though it’s certainly on my list. Its history, like so many good stories, is both romantic and tragic: It was developed by Tomas Camacho, who moved to Cuba in 1905 and fell in love with Pilar Toledo. Pilar and their daughter, also named Pilar, both died during the girl’s birth, and the heartbroken Camacho constructed an orchid garden in memory of his beloved Pilars. The garden now boasts 700 varieties of orchids and an entire library on the flower.
Our namesake version features gorgeous magenta blooms, broad leaves, and a moss-edged metal bowl that will never need water and never fade. It is all made of hand-cut, dyed, and pressed silk so realistic that Camacho himself would do a double-take.
