All of the guidebooks said Huaqing Palace was a must-see during our trip to Shaanxi Province. Its fame stems from its hot springs, where a long-ago emperor courted his concubine. Much of the property's stone is fine-grained and gray, culminating in more than 30 ancient stone steles, inscriptions, and carvings. They're stately and angular and strong, and they set off the surrounding trees and shrubs so stunningly that I had to figure out a way to bring it home.
The result is our Huaqing Planter, which has the industrial look and weight of raw stone, but it's actually made of clay in the traditional Asian manner so it's durable and weatherproof. Use it wherever you want an edgy accessory--or where you want the planting inside to seize the spotlight.
