Koko-en Vase Large

Still in its infancy by the standards of most centuries-old Japanese gardens (it's not quite 30 years old), Koko-en in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, still captured my heart. A peaceful mix of small ponds bordered by huge, flat rocks, trees pruned into artful shapes, and colorful foliage, it felt like every rock and tree had been placed just so.

I wanted that same thoughtful design in a container, and so the Koko-en Vase was born. Tall, slim pots for plants and flowers are hard to find, which is a shame: They add height, variety, and impact to a collection of plantings or containers.

The Koko-en Vase comes in three sizes that range from a stately 23 to a whopping 35 inches tall. Their woven-style texture adds yet another designer element (like tree bark or a basket), as do the two colorways.

Dimensions: 17 x 12 x 23 in inches. Imported. Handling Fee is $30.
