I had to ask our Chinese hosts about all of the lotus flowers I saw everywhere on our trip. They patiently explained that the lotus is one of the eight precious things in Buddhism, symbolizing purity and uprightness, and its Chinese name, Lian, sounds similar to the word meaning to bind or connect, as in marriage.
No wonder these beauties are planted everywhere in China and my Chinese friends hold such a deep reverence for them! The Lian Stool, with lotus leaves etched into its body and a flared rim, tries to do these charming flowers justice; it holds that delicate balance of a flower poised to bloom. Place the stool amongst the blooms in the garden, as it is handmade in the traditional Asian manner and glazed with a shiny, durable finish that won't fade or weather.
