We are pleased to bring this program to you. While, Wisteria, over the last 20 years, has tapped into a large number of hand-made, artisanal, and globally designed products, making us known for this, we have not been able to create a similar opportunity within the U.S. till now. We are delighted to launch the new Wisteria Premium Upholstery Program that is hand-made by U.S. artisanal workers carrying on the deep tradition of making fine furniture in the U.S.
Wisteria Premium Upholstery Program
USA Heritage
American manufacture and local craftsmanship are legendary. The US has a deep-rooted tradition of designing and making furniture across the mid-west, north-east, and south-east. Furniture making in the U.S. is almost an art form – and the early Shaker and Mission styles, American Empire style, Arts and Crafts style, Mid-Century Modern, and the Art Deco styles are testimony to this generational capability that we have nurtured and developed over centuries.
Made in the USA
Arguably, some of the best furniture is made in the US with an
attention to quality, detail, and an eye to design. We want to continue this tradition, as well as take this to the next level by allowing you to personalize these in a way that truly makes these individually crafted items your own and in that, a family tradition.
New Partnership
We are pleased to bring this program to you. While, Wisteria, over the last 20 years, has tapped into many hand-made, artisanal, and globally designed products, making us known for this, we have not been able to create a similar opportunity within the U.S. till now. About the Program - Made to Order
This is a made-to-order program, and all items are made in the North Carolina facility of our partner’s manufacturing operations. Each item is made to your selection, closely inspected by our partner, and then shipped to your home after our review and approval. This process from receiving your order, confirming all details, and crafting the product takes between 10-12 weeks* (Currently 28 weeks due to foam supply issue). It then takes another 1-2 weeks to ship from our partners facility in North Carolina to your home. We monitor every step of the way and can provide you details (on-request) along the journey the product undertakes, so that you can follow along and as well be informed on progress.
Quality Features & Craftsmanship
The cornerstone of a well-made Upholstery Furniture piece rests on five key aspects of construction – the quality of the frame and the materials used, the suspension, cushioning, legs, and upholstery. This is how you can tell the difference and expect lasting structural strength and enduring day-today use.
Frame
Everything begins with the frame. The type of wood used for the frame and how each piece is joined not only determines a sofa’s durability but will also be reflected in its cost. Slower-growing, denser hardwoods like alder, poplar, maple, teak, and walnut, while more expensive, are generally considered more suitable for lasting high-quality furniture and will typically outlast faster-growing and economical softwoods like pine and Douglas fir. Harder and denser woods do a better job of holding staples, nails, glue, and joinery in place. Our wood furniture made domestically uses kiln-dried lumber – this is a standard procedure done to remove all moisture to avoid the wood from warping. Additionally, our frames are constructed using the labor-intensive and traditional technique of mortise-and-tenon joinery, connecting pieces of wood with precisely routed tabs (tenons) that fit into holes (mortises).
Suspension
If the wood frame is the skeleton of a sofa, the springs stretched across it operate as the seat’s tendons and ligaments, weathering structural stress and preventing the cushions from flattening. Our furniture suspension uses eight-way hand tied springs. This time-consuming technique requires our furniture makers to strap and hand-knot individual hourglass-shaped coils with cord across the seat’s frame. When installed properly the hourglass springs ward off sagging and squeaking. In a few of our chairs, due to the frame, we employ
“webbing support” which is equally sturdy and durable.
Cushioning
The subjective nature of cushions invites the widest range of opinions when it comes to sofas. Some people love sinking into the upholstered embrace of a cushy-soft couch, others prefer a sofa with a firm feel and resilient shape. Our sofas are manufactured to feature seat and back cushioning filled with layers of high-resiliency foam, a high-response material characterized by an open-cell structure, resulting in a supportive feel that dependably retains its shape over time.
Upholstery
Upholstery truly matters and makes the difference! It is what you will see and feel for years after the purchase of your furniture. The “hand” on the fabric which describes the texture of the fabric is what you experience most and if maintained with care, certain high-performance fabrics can last for over a decade. Both natural fibers and synthetics offer varying degrees of durability, with natural fibers generally revealing a richer depth of color, and synthetics exhibiting a smoother feel, softness, and velvet-like hand-feel. We have worked with Valdese, a leading U.S. mill, to provide us with InsideOut brand performance fabrics that we feel will wear well over the life of the products usage and be both aesthetically pleasing and durable.
Legs
Our sofa legs and feet are made of wood, offering structural strength, and suitable detailing as it relates to grain and finish consistency. Our legs are uniform in height and the stain and finish is matched to make sure that aesthetically it conforms.
This attention to detail, is what makes our upholstered program different and sets it apart from the competition. It is a fine crafted piece of U.S. made furniture. American styling, craftsmanship and materials have withstood the test of time and is recognized the world-over for its lasting quality and durability.
